until after the American
Revolution. "Macomb's Purchase" was soon subdivided into
tracts that stimulated settlement.
Watertown was thus established and became the county seat. Jefferson
County was created in 1805 and was named after Thomas Jefferson.
The county has been world famous for its manufacturing of cotton,
woolen yarns, carriages, sewing machines, water pumps, oil lamps,
portable steam engines, printing presses and turbine starting systems.
Arbor Day, the Dewey
Decimal System, Woolworth's, Philadelphia Cream Cheese and Thousand
Islands Dressing, were all developed in Jefferson County. |
